Letter to VK Family Members (17/2/2009)
17/02/2009 (Tuesday) 23rd day of the Lunar Month
Sister, I am very well, don’t worry about me…
Sorry for not writing to everyone for so long. Sorry for not writing even during Chinese New Year. How are you? Are you all healthy?
Younger sis, are you working or studying now? Time passes so fast, two years has passed in the blink of an eye. You are 19 now, and you should be receiving this letter when nearing your birthday. When the day comes, allow me to wish you:
Happiness! Best in everything you do! May all your wishes come true!
Stay beautiful always! May people like you and respect you! Happy birthday!
Sis, do you have a boyfriend now?
Elder sis, It is only after what happened that I realize who loved me the most. Sis, I am very sorry for not appreciating you when you cared for me and gave me second chances. Sis, don’t feel bad for me now, and don’t think that you did not take care of me. Don’t hold yourself responsible for my mistakes. Don’t think too much. I know that you care about me. Sis, I am really grateful when you visited me at Queenstown Remand, and passed me the three Buddhist scriptures. These scriptures really helped in my study [of Buddhism], thoughts, and my life. Thank you so much!
Dad, how are you? Are you smoke less now? Are you eating healthier food? I was very happy to hear from brother that you gave money to younger sis for her driving license. I was even happier to hear that you paid a lot to buy new furniture, even know only mum stays in the house now. I guess this shows that you have forgiven mum for her past. Dad, I couldn’t have learnt Buddhism without you. Thank you, dad and mum, for all the grace you have shown me!
Dad, I notice that you look unhappy all the time. Dad, cherishing every moment leads you to a wonderful life. Happiness is a choice. Take care of yourself, and choose what is happy and good. Learn Buddhism from Aunt Lan, and practice the most powerful discipline – Vinaya, Amitabha.
I wish you health in this year of the Ox! I wish you peace and happiness! I wish you the best in everything you do.
Wishing everyone a happy Chinese New Year!
I apologize for any mistake in words and punctuations. Pardon me.
Like all the previous letters, I am writing to you using Chinese phonetics.

Bu Wei Liang:
How are you? I hope you are well.
Happy New Year!
It is very fortunate for me to have a chance to write a letter to you, especially that day I knew I am going to be hanged after three days. I feel very lucky, and I have let go all the vengeance. I now have a new name which is NanDili. There’s meaning behind the name. Anyway, in this New Year, let me make use of a Buddhist scripture in blessing you:
Respect from others
Elimination of various harms
Blessing from Bodhisattvas
Happy and sweet dreams
An abundance of wealth
Forgive the past with kind heart

VK Letter to His Eldest Brother (31/5/2010)
I hope you are well. I write to you with great joy, and in this letter, I hope to share with you a writings which can help you to understand the root of suffering. All suffering comes from oneself, and the root of suffering is ignorance. For example, issues which one faces in life must be dealt with properly. Instead, if one only uses his experience and does not make use of reason, he is said to be ignorant.
Brother, while I am here, I take time off every day to learn Buddhism. I also read the newspapers, and have seen reports of people unduly suffering from their ignorance. These people are unenlightened, yet they arrogantly think that they know it all. They assume that other people are wrong, and do not question their own conscience. Brother, the first thing the Buddha said when he attained enlightenment was: “All sentient beings are equal and possess the nature of a Buddha. They are only confused by the illusion in front of them.”
Brother, I sincerely urge you to learn positive realization and wisdom, to learn to prepare for the future. To attain such wisdom, you have to learn from the enlightened. The realization of Dharma is only pure if it is realized with equality. Only then will you not harm any other sentient beings in this life and the next. You will definitely not harm yourself too.
When you have a positive mental framework, these concepts will be internalized to become your own. Once you have these wholesome concepts, you will have a bright future ahead.
The world once had a great person who attained enlightenment – the Buddha (who is known by many other names). Most of us call him the Namo Shakyamuni Buddha. The meaning of Buddha is “Supreme realization of all Dharma.”(The awakened).
Brother, if you want to learn various Dharmas, you must learn from the four kinds of Buddhist disciples: 1) Monks; 2) Nuns; 3) Male disciples and 4) Female disciples.
Once you understand all the steps, you will have a bright future ahead.
However, you must understand the essence of these teachings. It is okay if you do not, as long as you willingly learn. However, you must have the determination to keep going until you understand.
From Younger brother Vui Kong
VK Letter to His Sisters （12/09/2008）
How are you? Are you healthy? Is your family happy? Ah Zhong (Note : Ah Zhong is VK’s 2nd Brother) has been visiting me. I heard from him that you are pregnant, congratulations! I pray to Buddha on your behalf for your child to be an intelligent, kind and filial one.
How are you? Are you used to working now? Is working hard? Ah Zhong told me that you want to work in Singapore, is that true? When do you intend to do that? Why do you want to work so far [from home]? Aren’t you scared? Who will take care of you? Who will you stay with? What kind of work will you be doing? Why did you decide to work so far away? Is Sandakan not good? Do Aunt and Mother know? Aren’t you going to continue studying?
You have to consider carefully. If you have a goal for your future which requires both knowledge and certification, I urge you to continue studying, and not to give up on everything you have now. Have you really thought about whether you are capable of further studies? If you are, I hope you keep improving yourself and work hard. Why stop studying when you are still so young? Your family doesn’t need your money [to support them], you don’t need money too. What benefits are there in going to work? Yes, you might earn a little bit of money, but you will be old then, and you will be uneducated. You will have a very small social circle, and have very little knowledge. Worst of all, the future husband you meet will be as simple-minded as you, and your family will suffer as a result of the simple-minded environment you are in, and the simple-minded people you meet. Am I right, Sis? You must really think carefully, okay?
Ah Zhong told me that he will support you if you decide to go to university or higher education. I believe with elder sis, aunt, mum and 2nd brother’s support, and if you do some part-time work while studying, than you can make it. Because of that, you will have a better life in the future. Since you have a good religion in Christianity, you can learn good virtues from the religion and make good friends too. Okay, I will stop here, take care.
I wrote a few letters to you before, have you received them? If you have, why have you not replied? Are you worried that I will feel pressure from you? If you are, don’t be, because I am at peace with myself now.
Over here, I have been worried about this person for a long time. He has a good heart, but grew up to be a very bad person. He is not filial to his parents, learn drug-taking from others, has a bad temper, is arrogant, miserly, not compassionate because of selfishness etc… But this man is trying to correct his past; he is serious about becoming a good man. I will take one example to describe how committed he is to be a good man- let’s say one man was walking in the jungle and he came across a fruit tree, he felt very greedy and took one fruit to eat. Now, because the fruit contained poison, he was poisoned. This man feels regretful eating this poisoned fruit; won’t this man fall into deep remorse? My dear sister, if you know this man has been poisoned and you know the way to cure him, won’t you cure him? I will give him a chance to turn over a new leaf. Do you think I am doing the right thing?
Before you answer me, let me tell you more about this person. He is thirty years old now, has no house, no car, no money, no freedom, no career, no wife, no son and daughter, no friend, no cloth, no knowledge, no correct mindset, has never been overseas, has no love from his mother, father, and siblings; this man has NOTHING, but he has HOPE… I will tell you more about his hope in the next letter. I will also let you understand him more – what happened when he was growing up, what affected his life, why he ended up like this. I will tell you all that in the next letter.
I’m really sorry for writing unstructured. I used to always act without thinking, and this is the reason I am in prison today. Therefore, I want to reflect on my thoughts. I hope when you read my letters, you will think deeply about what I mean too. What I want to say is the same as what I have been telling you in the previous letters. If you don’t think about it, you will not understand what I am writing. ：-）
Yours， Kong （12/9/2008）

(Self written Chinese Poem)
I gladly bow wishing Mother
On Thursday, the 10th of June
A very happy birthday
May your happiness spread to every corner of the world.
Mum, I am very well here. I am doing my best to practice and learn [Buddhism]. 2nd and 3rd brother visit me almost every week. All three of us are healthy. 3rd brother has fewer pimples than before. He cut his hair too, and looks more refreshed and attractive! We are mature; we can take care of ourselves and choose what is best for us.
I read a lot here. If I come across a good book, I will recommend to 2nd and 3rd Bro. When they visit me, I will take the chance to share the Dharma, give them the proper outlook. I have confidence that all of us will succeed in our own paths.
Mom, have faith in the Buddha and the Bodhisattva! Read more when you’re free. Best is read the Buddhist Scriptures. Occasionally, watch the Buddhist VCDs, or go and listen to Dharma talk in monasteries. There are so many benefits in learning Buddhism! To practice is even better! Because we are all bound to pass away one day, our bodies are impermanent. Like clothes, cannot last forever, and must be changed sooner or later. When you know the Dharma, it will be useful after the body dies. So recite the mantras when you have time. That’s best.
Namo Buddha, Namo Dhamma, Namo Sangha,
Namo Abitabha… …. …
Always chant – Mum – ：-）
Chant sincerely, and chant without any greed and want

VK Letter to His Family （26/5/2009）
To my dear family members:
Hello, how do you do? Do all of you healthy and work successfully? Do you guys have a peaceful and happy life? Well it’s ok if you don’t have. It is not a big deal without health, success, peace and happiness. What happened tomorrow and future are all the choice we make today. So, it is better to appreciate and grasp what you’ve done, said and thought.
One thing I need to remind all of you. Rest when you felt tired after working and don’t over stress yourselves. When there are worries, consult & ask the opinions from your friends or relatives. You might found some solutions for your problem. And another thing I would like to remind all of you is 10th of June is mother’s birthday, please don’t forget.
I’ve learnt a true story here and I would like to cultivate with all of you. This story is about cause and effect. Because this story is very long so I just write the main story line for you to understand. It says that we shouldn’t kill a living thing during our friends or relatives birthday, because this will cause a bad consequence. Furthermore, living things have their own feelings, families, parents and they can feel the pain too. What we can learn from this story is we should be aware to avoid this kind of thing will be happened, and we have to share our love broadly.
Dad, you are really a good man who cares for your children. I can felt your sincerity here and I’m very touch after second-elder brother, Ah Liang told me how you concern about my case. Dad, there is a reason to be said that the guilty person shouldn’t donate anything that belongs to their bodies in case of losing their souls. Actually this reason contains rather more difficult, delicate and meaningful intention. If there is a destiny for someday, I will write you a book for you to understand this intention, together with other things also.
Alright, I should stop right here. And I wish all of you healthy, happy, peaceful, work successfully for every day and night!
